Doorbells, costumes and extra activity can make Halloween feel very different to a pet. A little preparation can help you make room for the fun while keeping their routine comfortable.
Before the doorbell rings
Store candy in a secure place pets cannot reach. Chocolate and candy containing xylitol are hazards; if you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Set up a comfortable room away from the front door for pets who find visitors stressful. Bring in a familiar toy and keep the area secure while guests arrive.
Let comfort decide the costume
Only dress up a pet who enjoys it. Check that the outfit allows normal movement, breathing and vision, and has no small pieces that can be chewed off. Try it before Halloween and remove it if your pet seems uncomfortable.
Think about the trip outside
Check identification details and keep your pet securely leashed. For an after-dark outing, consider a reflective collar. Keep candles and electrical cords out of reach at home.

Make a short shopping list
Before visiting, note what you already have: a comfortable walking setup, readable identification and a familiar toy. If you are considering clothing, bring your pet’s measurements and a photo of the item you have in mind. An outfit is optional—the goal is a comfortable pet.
